Pre-orders open for The Fear Collectors!

Pre-orders are now open for The Fear Collectors, over on the Satalyte Publishing website.

The paperback is AUD$26.99, while the e-book is AUD$4.99.

The release date has not yet been finalised, but this is a book I have finished writing (as opposed to one of those mythical creatures, a book that’s been contracted but not yet written), so it’s just a matter of working out the editing and publishing schedule.

Here’s the blurb that I wrote for the website (blurb writing is not my strong point):

The Fear Clinic promises relief from the phobias; common to rare, that plague so many people. But Erica isn’t convinced that it’s working for her sister Missy. In fact, Missy seems to be getting worse, instead of better.

With the help of her best friend, Toby, Erica starts delving into the background of the clinic and soon finds that not everything is as it seems. She becomes determined to get Missy out of there, before Missy can end up like some of the clinic’s past patients—dead.

But will she succeed—or will the Fear Clinic claim her and Toby as well as Missy?

Acceptance: ‘Pictures and Memories’ (LT3 general submissions)

This short story was originally submitted to LT3’s Silver and Gold May-December relationships anthology, but was declined due to lack of space. I was encouraged to resub it to LT3 as a general submission, did so, and got the good news on the first of April. I think it’s a credit to my slowly growing self-confidence that I didn’t immediately assume it was an April Fool’s joke.

When I say ‘short’ story, it’s just over 10,000 words and will be published as an e-book.

Titles

I renamed The Vector Recalibration to The Triad Trial because in the end the story hadn’t had as much maths in it as I’d intended, so a really mathsy title, even one referencing triangles, wasn’t going to work.

I also renamed it because people have been asking if I title my books based on the style of the Big Bang Theory episode titles. I don’t.

In 2003 I didn’t win NaNoWriMo and my book was called Postmodernism Stole My Dingo. In 2004 I did win NaNo and my book was called The Littlest Halfling. The next year’s book was The Golden Players and that also broke 50K. Not content to stick with existing superstition, I made up my own: I would only reach 50K during November if my book title was ‘The [something] [something]’.

This held true right up to 2014, when a horrific battle with bronchitis, including a hospital visit, meant that The Saints’ March only reached 30K. That was fine since I’d only expected to get to 25K, so I was actually pretty pleased with myself.

The fact is I’m dreadful at titles. If I can stick to a formula for myself, then I will. I wish I could do single-word ones like Stephen King does (IT, Cell, 11/22/63), or clever Shakespeare references like Seanan McGuire (Rosemary and Rue, the entire October Daye series). To be honest though I’m more likely to use P!nk lyrics or oblique Red Dwarf references.

It’s funny how writers can commit thousands and thousands of words to the page, and yet when it comes to encapsulating those thousands of words in just a few words, we are tongue-tied.

Uni update: Semester One 2015

Semester one 2015 starts next week, and I have finally wrangled my subjects into some sort of order. I’m doing Public Relations Writing, and Law & Regulation for Comms. I haven’t checked out PR Writing much yet (I don’t even know which room it’s in, oops), but I’m rolling around in delight at the L&R stuff. Social media! Parody and defamation! Intellectual property!

This is gonna be fun.

Acceptance: The Vector Calibration (for Intertwined, LT3)

I got the contract for this emailed through today and now I’m second guessing the title and fretting about my Facebook presence and augh.

But! Book! (Well, novella.) Long enough to get a print copy! I am excited.

Acceptance: The Fear Collectors (Satalyte Publishing)

I’ve actually known about this since last November, but due to the holiday period and busyness on both ends, it wasn’t until today that I officially have a contract signed by me and Stephen Ormsby of Satalyte Publishing, for my novel The Fear Collectors. I have it right here on my desk. I may or may not be petting it lovingly between sentences.

It’s YA horror/fantasy. Think R.L. Stine (Fear Street more than Goosebumps) or Christopher Pike and that’s pretty much the vibe that my (hopefully!) cover artist Lucy Fekete got when she read it. Lucy has already made progress on a cover mock-up that’s super creepy and that I’m keeping my fingers crossed can be used. We work together and she has already illustrated a picture book written by one of our co-workers, Bronwyn Heeney, as well as many other projects, so I knew her style was what I wanted for The Fear Collectors.

I don’t have a publication date at present, but you can be sure I will make many more excited noises about this as it progresses.

Gods all bless, little book. I didn’t know which book would be the first, but with any luck, The Fear Collectors won’t be the last. (Because it sure as shit ain’t no To Kill a Mockingbird – oh, wait…)
